Rainfall follows the path
of least resistance
always toward gravity
down, down, down
into the ground
always seeking
its destination down
never realizing
journey’s end.
Like an orphan’s severed
family tree piled
into firewood along
the side of the road
for anyone to use
as the orphan travels
downhill in survival mode
searching for civilization
living near the river.
